Local Sports

The Lowcountry region has no major league sports teams, but there are a number of minor league professional teams in Charleston, about an hour north, including the Battery soccer team, the RiverDogs baseball team, the Outlaws rugby team, and the Charleston Gaelic Athletic Association, promoting the sports of hurling and Gaelic football.

Savannah has its own minor league teams, including the Savannah Sand Gnats baseball team, Savannah Wildcats CBL basketball team, and Savannah Storm ABA basketball team.

Hunting: Hunting is popular in South Carolina, with big game including bear, deer, and turkeys, birding doves, geese, rails, ducks, and snipe, and side hunting of feral hogs, alligator, coyote. Trapping includes beaver and muskrat. Check with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for details.

Fishing: South Carolina has a wealth of fishing options, including freshwater and saltwater fish. Freshwater fish include eel, trout, herring, bluegill, catfish, bass, carp, sunfish, and shad, among others. Saltwater fish include eel, sturgeon, flounder, and shellfishing.

Stingray Warning: The estuary areas can occasionally have concentrations of stingrays. Leave them alone, and if stung seek help immediately. Stingray stings are usually not life-threatening, but they can be serious and hurt quite a lot.
